Next Polarstern trip started in March (Puntas Arenas, Chile) (Mar 2012)
The Polarstern is the most important tool in Germany's polar research program. Two Co-workers join the Polarstern for four weeks in order to collect samples in antarctic waters. The cruise starts and ends in Puntas Arenas, Chile (13 March - 9 April 2012). One focus of the cruise leg will be the comprehensive assessment of the Roseobacter clade, a prominent component of the Antarctic bacterioplankton, in the Drake Passage and the Antarctic Peninsula region. Bacteria of the Roseobacter clade play a prominent role in the Southern Ocean. The goal of the project is a comprehensive assessment of the Roseobacter clade and its major bacterioplancton subclusters in the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean. This project is part of a key work package of the Transregional Collaborative Research Center Ecology, Physiology and Molecular Biology of the Roseobacter clade: Towards a Systems Biology Understanding of a Globally Important Clade of Marine Bacteria (TRR 51).
